Project Description:

On 21 February 2010 the Premier announced an expansion of light rail in Sydney with up to 20 new stations and almost 10 kms of new track, with a budget of $500million, as part of the Metropolitan Transport Plan: Connecting the City of Cities.

There will be separate process for Stage 1 – Inner West Extension and Stage 2 – CBD Extension to take account of the different times, nature and characteristics of the two project stages.


The Stage 1 Inner West extension capitalises on the opportunity to use the disused freight railway line to extend the existing light rail system 5.6km from its current terminus at Catherine Street, Lilyfield to Dulwich Hill.

Current Status:

Transport NSW is in negotiations with Metro Transport Sydney (MTS), the owner of the existing Light Rail Concession to agree terms and conditions.
